Wellingborough has a long tradition of radicalism and socialism, perhaps best embodied by Gerrard Winstanley and the Wellingborough Diggers - a collection of people who, hungry and oppressed by the rich landowners, "took land unto themselves in the name of sustaining life, not as a means of power or authority to deprive others."
The Wellingborough Diggers Festival is now an established annual community event in Wellingborough.
The 2019 festival will be held on the 13th July, 2019, at the Wellingborough Old Grammarians Memorial Sports Field, Wellingborough, NN8 6BS. The Sports Field is across the road from the land formally known as "Bareshank", the site of the original Wellingborough Diggers community.
